2nd July 2010: a Historical day!

The United Nations General Assembly unanimously decided to establish UN Women , the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.

UN Women will merge UNIFEM with its three existing sister UN entities working on gender issues — the Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW), the Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI), and the UN International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW): they will continue their functions and activities into the transitional phase (July - Dec 31, 2010) and form the basis of the new entity next year.

The creation of a strong UN organization to promote and advance the rights of women and girls worldwide, has been a requested for many years by women's organizations.

This marks a new era for women all over the world and it is wonderful to know that BPW, through its tireless efforts, has helped to achieve it with renewed energy and enthusiasm for women and girls everywhere.

UN Women will become fully operational on 1 January 2011.
